TEAMS: Smithy’s VFL Round 4 (2024)

All the teams for Round 4 in the Smithy’s VFL.

Port Melbourne has received a double fillip as it attempts to win its first game of the Smithy’s VFL season with star recruits Robbie McComb and Dan McKenzie rushed in to take on fellow winless team Carlton at IKON Park on Sunday.

The Borough showed significant improvement against Casey Demons last week but couldn’t complete a four-quarter performance, with the return of McComb overcoming a foot injury to play his first game since Round 1 and McKenzie to wear the red and blue stripes for the first time.

Dangerous forward Kyle Viccars also returns from injury to fill the role of star small Anthony Anastasio, who went down with a hamstring injury last week, while Tasmanian recruit Sam Green will make his VFL debut.

Carlton made four changes to the team that lost to Collingwood by a point, with Alex Cincotta back from a rest and big man Alex Mirkov selected after undergoing a conditioning block to replace AFL call-ups Lachie Cowan and Lewis Young.

Hawthorn excitement machine Changkuoth Jiath will play his first game in the comeback from his latest injury among a whopping nine changes for Box Hill Hawks’ match of the round against North Melbourne at Fenjiu Stadium.

Jiath has been sidelined all year with another hamstring problem but will be on the park alongside omitted Hawks Josh Ward, Sam Butler and Max Ramsden, who lost their AFL spots to Jack Gunston, Harry Morrison and Jai Serong

Meanwhile, SSP recruit Ethan Phillips and star VFL-lister Stu Horner are also into the team – the latter for his first game of the season. Josh Bennetts and Ned Reeves will miss with concussion and Jaylon Thorpe has a sore hamstring again.

North Melbourne has named experienced Hawthorn great Liam Shiels and tough midfielder Hugh Greenwood, while Miller Bergman returns from a broken jaw and Ben Davis is also in. Will Phillips has been promoted, Wil Dawson rested and two youngsters will play in the Young Guns game.

Sport-hopper Wil Parker will play his first game since switching back to footy from cricket over summer in Collingwood’s clash with Coburg at Piranha Park.

The leg-spinner who played for Victoria and Melbourne Renegades before returning to the Sherrin will be unveiled alongside prolific goalkicker Patrick Farrant, who has forced his way in after kicking 14 goals in two games for the Fitzroy Stars, including nine last week. Farrant booted 107 in 16 games for WA country club Bridgetown in 2023.

The Magpies will be without AFL emergency Harvey Harrison, concussed ruckman Oscar Steene and star midfielder Lachie Sullivan, who is also on the cusp of AFL selection despite not being named in Collingwood’s 26 to face Port Adelaide.

The Lions have lost Max Kennedy to a one-match suspension for rough conduct from their win over the AFL National Academy last week.

Brisbane Lions’ speedster Conor McKenna has been named to play his first VFL match since 2016 when they attempt to bounce back from last week’s wasteful loss to North Melbourne against Geelong at Brighton Homes Arena on Saturday.

The Lions have handed debuts to Queensland products Rohan Bailey and Ben Thomas as Liston medallist Jarryd Lyons and James Tunstill go up to the AFL team.

The Cats regain Shannon Neale and Connor O’Sullivan from their AFL taste, Bailey van de Heuvel and Osca Riccardi from a rest and local footy, while back-up ruck Ajang Kuol Mun gets another chance and reigning Morrish medallist Patrick Hughes wins a debut.

Toby Conway goes up for the rested Rhys Stanley, Marcus Herbert is in concussion protocols, goalsneak Tobyn Murray is playing for the Young Guns, Irishman Oisin Mullin has headed overseas for a family wedding and James Willis is out with illness – possibly brought on by his journey into outer space to take a mark of the year contender against the Bullants.

Southport Sharks champion Jacob Dawson will miss his first game since the Sharks joined the VFL, being unavailable for their visit to Essendon.

Dawson was down on his usual brilliant output in last week’s loss to Williamstown and will take the opportunity to refresh as star QAFL midfielder Brock Aston earns a VFL debut in his place after a top-four finish in last year’s Grogan Medal and a strong start to 2024 with Redland-Victoria Point.

The Sharks regain Jay Lockhart from suspension, Max Pescud from injury and Rhys Clark from illness for the must-win game as they strive to avoid a 1-3 start against a Bombers team that will debut Montmorency product Cam Nyko in place of in-form Oskar Smartt after his Young Guns call-up, while Elijah Tsatas returns to the AFL.

Werribee and GWS have each copped significant injury blows ahead of their clash at Avalon Airport Oval, with the Tigers losing star Geelong recruit Cooper Whyte for six weeks with an elbow injury, while the Giants will be without Port Adelaide signing Harper Montgomery for up to three months with a broken leg.

The Giants also lose recruit Marc Sheather to a four-week suspension for rough conduct, plus Callan Ward and Leek Aleer to the AFL, but experienced defenders Nick Haynes and Lachie Keeffe will replace them.

It’s one in and one out for Williamstown in its Terry Wheeler Cup showdown with fellow undefeated outfit Footscray as livewire Mitch Cox returns from injury in place of rebound defender Ryley Stoddart, who has a thumb problem.

The Bulldogs lost in-form trio Riley Garcia, Rory Lobb and James Harmes to the AFL team but will still have Caleb Daniel at their disposal as he is joined by the omitted Oskar Baker.

Luckless Sydney big man Sam Reid has been sidelined by another soft tissue injury after straining his quad against Richmond on Easter Sunday, but despite Taylor Adams’ quick AFL call-up the Swans have called in the cavalry for their daunting task against a Gold Coast team they haven’t beaten in seven matches over four years.

Sydney has midfielders Corey Warner and Caleb Mitchell back from the AFL and Gus Sheldrick returning from a broken finger, while key forward Jack Buller plays his first game of the year and Joel Hamling returns from illness, with Academy product James Lugsdin to make his debut from Manly-Warringah.

The Suns lose the fourth of their first-round Academy picks to the AFL in Jake Rogers, plus Sean Lemmens to a four-week suspension for a dangerous tackle and Connor Budarick, with Oskar Faulkhead and Sandy Brock returning from injury.

All matches in the 2024 Smithy’s VFL and VFLW seasons will be live streamed free via the AFL website, AFL Live Official App and VFL App.

Smithy’s VFL broadcast partner, the Seven Network, will broadcast select matches live and free on the Seven Network in Victoria and on 7plus nationally. This week’s game will be Carlton vs Port Melbourne.
