Thursday May 11 1995 RDM TR Obituaries Gannett Suburban Newspapers Leon Bernstein local leader of Jewish programs dies at 81 Leon Bernstein a Scarsdaleresident who escaped Nazi Ger cmany in 1936 and became a lead 'er in local Jewish education pro grams died Monday of heart failure while returning from a business trip to California He was 81 Mr Bernstein was an active congregant of Temple Israel inWhite Plains for many years and later became a member of the Hebrew Institute of White Plains He served as chairman of the Temple Israel Religious School Board He was president of the Westchester Association of He brew Schools for several years On Jan 22 he was honored with a testimonial breakfast at I the Hebrew Institute on behalf ofthe United Jewish Appeal eder ation for his years of service to religious and charitable causes Greenburgh Town Justice' Ascher Katz a close friend said Mr Bernstein a vigorous man who remained in full com imand of himself and his business until the day he was my personal friend deeply saddened by his the town justice was devoted to his wife andfamily his friends and his com He was a leader an 'bducator and a philanthropist and very proud to have been his friend for 25 He was born Nov 6 1913 to Mr and Mrs Nathan Bernstein in Hamburg Germany Mr Bernstein who was raised and educated in Germany fled the country in 1936 with the help of an uncle He settled in New York City Eventually he was able to help his four broth ers and their families come to the United States During World War II Mr Bernstein was a member of the US Army He served as an Leon Bernstein intelligence officer in the Pacific for three years On Sept 30 1945 he and Isa belle Levi were married The family moved to Scarsdale 35 years ago In 1946 Mr Bernstein and his wife founded Leon Bernstein Commercial Corp an import ex port business based in Hartsdale that he continued to run until his death But he was best known for his charity work He was a frequent contributor to the United Jewish Appeal In recognition of his pur chases of Israel Bonds he was made a member of the Israeli Prime Club Mr Bernstein was also a sup porter of the American Israel Lighthouse Share Zedek Hospi tal Yeshiva University Bar Ilan University and several other reli gious and charitable organiza a 'i tions When his daughter Stephanie Bernstein was murdered at her home near Venice Calif in 1990 Mr Bernstein did not join those who called for the death penalty daughter would never have wanted anyone to get the death he said in an interview shortly after the kill conviction in 1991 Rather than worry about revenge he said he preferred to concentrate on the establishment of a memo rial fund in his name Proceeds of The Stephanie Bernstein Memorial und are used to help children with learn ing disabilities with their He brew studies In addition to his wife of Scarsdale Mr Bernstein is sur vived by a son Elliot of Chicago and two brothers William of New York City and David of La Hospital Medical Center in Port Chester She was 94 She was bom Nov 15 1900 to Harry and Estella Deck Gerhard in Macungie Pa where she grew up The 53 year resident of Port Chester also had lived in Hialeah la Mamaroneck and New York City On Nov 27 1941 she and Barney Ostroff were married in Port Ches ter He died in 1959 or 30 years Mrs Ostroff worked for the New York Telephone Co as a telephone operator Earlier she worked for the State National Bank in Greenwich Conn Mrs Ostroff was a member of the RSVP the Retired Seniors Vol unteer Program at Ridge Street School in Rye Brook She also did volunteer work for the American Heart Association Mrs Ostroff is survived by a daughter Dorothy Myers of Kato nah two granddaughters a grand son and six great grandchildren Arrangements are by James attended Thornwood and Pleasant ville schools On Jan 20 1940 he and Annette redericks were mar ried in Thornwood The couple moved to Elmsford in 1940 and then to Red Hook 20 years ago or 33 years Mr Stephenson was a quality control supervisor for the Otis Elevator Company in Yonkers He retired in 1975 He also be longed to the Otis orman Club He was a member of the Elks lodge in White Plains In addition to his wife he is survived by two daughters Marilyn Catucci and Betsy Krangle both of Elmsford a son William Ste phenson of Elmsford 11 grand children and two great grand children McElroy lynn uneral Home in Elmsford is handling the arrange ments Emma Chase Viola ex Eastchester resident Emma Chase Viola a homemaker and a former resident of Eastches ter and Mount Vernon died Tues day at her home in the Granite Springs area of Somers She was 88 Mrs Viola was bom Dec 5 1906 to Giovanni and Teresa Melfi in Providence RI She and her family moved to Newark NJ in 1910 In 1920 she moved to Mount Vernon On Sept 5 1936 she and Car mine Viola were married at Calvary Baptist Church in Mount Vernon Her husband died April 23 1986 She lived in Mount Vernon until 1956 when she moved to Eastches ter She moved to Granite Springs in 1990 Mrs Viola was a member of irst Baptist Church in Bronxville She was a member of the Society of Calvary Baptist Church and the irst Baptist Church The Baptist church was the cen ter of her life her family said Survivors include a daughter Evelyn Viola Brown of Granite Springs three sisters Anna Satraile of Mount Vernon Eleanor Sussman of Los Gatos Calif and Ruth Luiso of San Jose Calif three brothers Albert usco and David usco both of the Crestwood section of Yonkers and Thomas usco of Palm Harbor la and three grandchildren Yannantuono uneral Home in Mount Vernon is handling the ar rangements Joseph Povella auto body shop owner Joseph Povella of Elmsford own er operator of Auto Body in Elmsford died Monday at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center in North Tarrytown He was 44 or the past 15 years Mr Povella owned and operated Auto Body He was bom Dec 25 1950 to Alexander and Mary Casino Povella in Port Chester He was raised and educated in Elmsford On Oct 13 1973 he and Anne Gallagher were married at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Elmsford He was a parishioner of the church He was a member for life and former captain at Elmsford ire
