Manual of the Planes (5e) - Dungeon Masters Guild | Dungeon Masters Guild (5)

Content Warning

In addition to the traditional antagonists, archetypal evil, and sinister societies encountered in the kinds of fantasy adventures Dungeons & Dragons is known for, this book addresses some topics that can be very stressful for some readers.

Negative Psychological Effects

Magic, darkness, and even weather can drive characters wild. This is a general theme throughout the book, but is especially prevalent in certain planes described in chapter 3:

The Feywild (memory loss)
The Shadowfell (despair)
The Abyss (aggression)
Arborea (yearning)
Bytopia (alignment change)
Elysium (complacency)
Gehenna (selfishness)
Hades (depression)
Mechanus (alignment change)
The Nine Hells (alignment change)
Pandemonium (obsession)

These planes have optional exploration rules to represent the ways the realms wear down or build up visitors and alter their mental state. If anyone in your play group is uncomfortable with this narrative, you can disregard those exploration rules.

Death and the Afterlife

In traditional D&D cosmology, the souls of deceased creatures live on in the planes. This is a general theme throughout the book and cannot be easily avoided. Chapter 2 provides options for adapting the mechanics and lore of creature agency and the afterlife to suit your play group’s preferences.

Child Maltreatment

This topic is only breached once in the book, in chapter 3, discussing Mount Celestia’s favorite mortals to protect, watch over, and invite to angelhood. This can be easily avoided by saying that Mount Celestia’s inhabitants have no favorites.

Manual of the Planes (5e) - Dungeon Masters Guild | Dungeon Masters Guild (6)

Being Respectful

Everyone in your play group is responsible to behave respectfully. Here’s some helpful guidelines you can use to establish what boundaries your table wants to set while enjoying a planar campaign.

Content Warning

Have an open discussion about what player and DM comfort levels are in regards to the topics described in the Content Warning above. This conversation can take place as a group or privately, one-on-one between DM and players.

If the table as a whole is comfortable with a topic, discuss how immersive you’d like to get in such moments. Some players enjoy the catharsis of being immersed in difficult conflicts for a character, some don’t.

If anyone in the play group is uncomfortable with a topic, don’t breach that topic. You don’t need to ask why; any shock value isn’t as important as everyone having fun.

Personal History

If a player or DM is uncomfortable with a topic, you don’t need to ask why. Simply knowing preferences is enough information to show respect.

If another member of your play group confides in you why they’re uncomfortable with a topic, especially if it’s for a traumatic reason, don’t share it with others and don’t try to incorporate it into the story anyways.

Change Topics

If your group decides to dive into the darker elements of this book or add your own serious twists to the lore and mechanics within, people may change their minds or discover they’re uncomfortable with topics they originally thought would be fine. If someone raises a concern like this, even if it’s at an inconvenient time in the story, listen. Change the topic. Add it as a new item to your list of topics not to be discussed or brought into the story.

Group members can voice their concerns when they come up, but sometimes that can be daunting. To make it easier, you can implement a “magic word,” “safe word,” or “password” that group members can say to indicate they’re uncomfortable. You could also have a special symbol on the table (such as a paper with a large X drawn on it) that a party member can touch to indicate the same.

If someone expresses discomfort, that’s a good time to take a break to discuss comfort levels, grab a snack, and use the bathroom.

The Dark of It (FAQ)

Q: Do I need to ownPlanescape: Adventures in the Multiverse to use this book?

A: Although many readers will find having both books enhances their experience, no you don't. TheManual of the Planes is designed to be a standalone product that dovetails perfectly withAdventures in the Multiverse, not one that ignores or replaces it.

Q: What kind of art is in this book?

A: This book has decorative graphics, characteristic quotes, and a diagram of the Inner Planes. In future updates, we may add additional diagrams and maps of other planes. It does not have traditional illustrations. We would LOVE to have included traditional illustrations, but stock art that fits the unique landscapes and creatures of the planes is rare or nonexistant, our production timeline didn't have enough time to commission custom art, and commissioning custom art was financially unfeasible during development.

Q: 2nd Edition (2e) Planescape books were written using planewalker slang, while most 5th Edition (5e) books are written in the style of a reference text. What kind of writing style does theManual of the Planes use?

A: The main text of the book is written in the 5e style, like an imaginative and entertaining encyclopedia or textbook. Many of our characteristic quotes use planewalker slang in the 2e style. A planewalker slang dictionary is provided on page 2 and can be found in the file preview.

Q: Is there a version of the PDF that is friendly to black-and-white home printers?

A: Yes! The reduced-file size version is in black and white and lacks any decorative graphics. It is included as a download option with this purchase.

Q: Is there a reduced file size version of the PDF?

A: Yes! The reduced-file size version is in black and white and lacks any decorative graphics. It is included as a download option with this purchase.

Q: If I buy the PDF now, will I have access to future updates?

A: Yes. You can access updated files in your DMs Guild/DriveThru RPG library at any time after purchasing.

Q: Will there be a print-on-demand edition?

A: That's the hope. We intend to offer theManual of the Planes in print beginning in early 2024.

Q: If I buy the PDF now, will I have a discount on the print-on-demand version? Will there be a discount on the print-on-demand edition if I purchase the PDF version before?

A: Yes. If we are able to offer a print-on-demand edition, we will also offer a discount bundle option for people who already own the PDF. This will let you subtract the PDF's cost from the print-on-demand edition's cost.

Hi! I just purchased this the other day and I was wondering why Pelor isn't mentioned in the chapter detailing Elysium?

Hey there! Excellent question. Pelor is primarily known as an Oerthly god from the Greyhawk campaign setting. The DMs Guild does not allow us to refer to official campaign settings that were in earlier editions of DND but not yet in 5e (e.g. Greyhawk, Dark Sun, Mystara, Birthright, Nentir Vale, and so on) or their distinct likenesses (e.g. a rose by any other name...). So we didn't mention any gods, locations, denizens, or so on that are primarily or exclusively tied to an unallowed campaign setting. There's plenty of things that overlap though, such as Vecna, who started as a Greyhawk guy but has been incorporated into many other campaign settings in DND's history and in 5e. Content that significantly overlaps or is setting agnostic is fine. And yes, Pelor is mentioned in 5e's Infernal Machine Rebuild, but only in passing. He lacks a substantial 5e presence tied to allowed settings.

Given that the upcoming Vecna: Eve of Ruin adventure will visit the Greyhawk campaign setting, we suspect Greyhawk...See more

It's too late to edit my previous comment (we only have 10 minutes to do so) but I'd also like to add that the speculation on whether Greyhawk will be an allowed setting on the DMs Guild is just that: speculation. Wizards has announced that Greyhawk will be visited in Vecna: Eve of Ruin, and the DMs Guild has historically added settings to the "approved" list when they are first visited in 5e, but that won't necessarily always be the case. For example, Ghosts of Saltmarsh is an adventure anthology of aquatic or seaside horror classic adventures revitalized for 5e, most or all of which are originally from the Greyhawk setting. But Greyhawk did not become an approved setting when Ghosts of Saltmarsh released, so it may still not be approved upon Vecna: Eve of Ruin. So we can't be certain.

Hey there John! :) About a month ago we started publicly telling people the following...

1. Expect POD to release somewhere around April to June.
2. Surprise announcement! We're actually adding more content and revising some of what's already there. Things we think are important to include but didn't have time to address properly in the original publication, and things we think could be presented more clearly. Expect about 8d8 more pages.
3. Expect the POD to be about $100 for hardcover and $60 for softcover, but a $30 discount off both of those if you already own the PDF.
4. The new and revised content will be free to all people who already own the PDF.

We're very excited and working hard. If you'd like to check in for further updates or questions, you're welcome to keep posting on this page, but you can also email us directly! Our email address is on the Credits page, under "Contact Us."

Fantastic work! Have you considered adding 2e planar effects on magic? I don't mean spell keys that no one liked, I mean things like fire magic being negated in the water plane and vice versa. Or fire magic doing extra damage on the fire plane. Or illusions not working on Mechanus, weather-affecting magic not working in the Beastlands, or color-reliant magic not working in Hades? You have them for the positive/negative energy planes, and I feel like they add some flavor and mechanical interest to the planes by changing how players may need to approach their spells.

CREATOR

Hey there! Actually, yes! We did look at those kinds of effects on magic and considered them as "exploration rules." Because there's so many planes and so many of them had specific rules for several of the 8 schools of magic I think it's probably unwise to go through every 2e rule and explain why we did/didn't include it in this book (not that you asked me to). But that in itself is the biggest answer: because there are SO many rules and we wanted to keep things simple enough that readers who are familiar with the core rulebooks can readily incorporate our 5e rules into their games, we cut out all of the rules except the ones that seemed most iconic or otherwise important to us.

Regarding the specific examples you shared...
- Positive and Negative have different approaches to "more/less magic" in different editions. So we made it simple: damage and healing does 2x more or less in each of those planes. Note that although this affects a lot of spells, it has no effect on spells...See more

As a writer on this project who worked on a number of planar effects, I can confirm that we tried implementing several of these effects. The problems arose when we realized that 5e lacks the robust descriptor system used in 3.5 to organize these sorts of alterations.

It's easy to categorize all fire spells as "spells that deal fire damage", but there aren't any keywords to denote an effect being based on water, air, or earth. Similar issues arise when trying to make more esoteric exceptions or alterations, and trying to call out specific spells results in confusion when similar new spells are printed but not acknowledged.

Great question, yes! After a LOT of internal discussion and research into how both 5e and earlier editions present those planes, we decided to describe them as regions within the Elemental Chaos that lies between the four Elemental planes and two Energy planes. These regions are not distinct layers or separate planes - you can walk, sail, or fly from region to region without needing to perform any special magical ceremonies or brute forcing your way through a magical barrier. Most of these regions have unique optional exploration rules tied to them. For example, the icy region has extreme cold, as described in the Dungeon Master's Guide.

Hey fellas! Any update as to when we might expect a print on demand release? I understand this was released digitally around the same time Chains of Asmodeus was (a little earlier, I think?) and that just got its PoD. I understand that things were probably expedited for CoA because that's a first party thing (I think?), but this is product of really high quality, so I'm hoping it won't be too far behind.

I want this to occupy physical space on one of my many shelves!

Hey there Louis! Well, after discussing it with the team, we believe now is a good time to make an announcement. :)

There's changes coming. Big changes. We're going to make a major update to the book and wanted to wait until that update was ready before launching the print version. Here's some of the changes you can expect to see in the update:
- More content. Across the entire book (not just chapter 3) there'll be lots of new content and some revised content! We have most if not all of the ideas generally laid out, but are still writing up the details. Want to know how many extra pages the book will have? Roll 8d8 and expect that number.
- Revised graphic design. Simply put, some parts of the layout and graphic design were rushed. We're going to take the time to do a proper job of ensuring the book is visually top-notch.
- No price change. The price of the digital version of the book will not change.
- No content removal. No content will be removed, although some content may...See more

Yeah. One of the many discussions we're having internally is how to balance our desire to bring EVERYTHING from earlier editions to the modern audience and edition, expand on the framework set before us by innovating new ideas, and keeping the page count low enough that excited readers and passionate planewalkers can still afford a hard- or soft-cover version of this book (as the page count goes up, the cost of printing and cost of sale go up too). At current forecasts, we expect the print version to cost as much as $100 for hardcover ($70 for people who already own the PDF) and $60 for softcover ($30 for people who already own the PDF). Even without the upcoming major update, the book as it currently stands would still cost $90/55 respectively.

Apologies if this has been asked before: Will there ever be a POD offering of this? I'm a fan of hardcopy when I can get it, and Manual of the Planes seems like a perfect candidate for it.

Buying the PDF will get you a discount on the Hardcover, so there's nothing lost by buying now and getting the physical copy later.

Question - how does Planar Endurance work exactly? Is it a 30 ft aura around the caster, does it target one creature within 30 feet? The wording of the spell implies multiple targets but seemingly has no limitation on their number?

Great catch! After discussing it with the team, we've decided that the next update will clarify that it targets 1 creature you can see within range, but at higher levels you can target an additional creature for each slot used beyond 4th.

Just skimmed a large portion of the pdf and I'm loving the sheer quantity of detail that's in here. I eagerly await the chance to get the PoD when it comes out. Be sure to keep us updated, yeah?

Has anyone who's read this also read through the Codex of Infinite Planes? How does that compare? I own a hard cover of the Codex and I'm wondering if its worth it to grab this too. Much of the contents seem to cover the same topics, but I do see some new things in here that are interesting. I am mostly interested in planes lore and information on the setting. Thanks!

Excellent question! Here's what the author of the Codex of Infinite Planes had to say on the matter:

"I picked up this Manual of the Planes this morning from the DMsGuild, and my first impression - incredible work! As someone with their own treatise on the planes up for sale (cough cough Codex of the Infinite Planes) I'm always keen on expanding my knowledge of the planes and diving into other takes on the infinite nature of the multiverse. This is a really good sourcebook with lots of cool ideas - I especially love the planar effects table for each plane, I wish I had thought of that one! Definitely looking forward to picking up the Manual of the Planes on POD when it becomes available. Nice layout, good use of styles to break up the pages (definitely LOOKS like a Planescape book from the 2E era!), loads of useful information for building out and playing on the planes. Great job to the team!"

Great question! I sometimes do that with DMs Guild products too. It does not come with a back cover to the PDF - it simply ends at page 336 with the final page of the Appendix. I don't know about your friendly local print shop, but the places I've had print 100+ page PDFs for me offer a nice piece of cardstock or plastic for a back cover on my spiral-bound products for only a small fee.

Depending on how you get your ink and paper, I love printing it out myself and then using a thermal binder to make a nice, non-spiral book. I haven't done that to this book yet, but depending on the number of pages and how thick your paper is, this may need a 1" binding cover. (They come with a nice see-through front cover and usually a nice black back cover.) The biggest cost is the thermal binder itself, but if you print A LOT (which I do), it's worth the investment!!!

Exactly how likely is it that a PoD version of this will actually come out? I heard they'll only let you do it if the book sells well enough, but this looks to be really popular so I'm curious as to how close it is to meeting the necessary criteria.

Extremely likely. We've already started working on the finer details that PoD requires on the production end, and we're already around a third of the way to the required digital sales to qualify for PoD in only 2-3 weeks. So by the time the PoD version is ready for production in early 2024, we fully expect to have also met the sales requirements.

Oh damn. You have to hit a certain number of digital sales to be able to offer POD???

I'd like to support that but don't want to double-purchase, although I really like having both PDF *and* hardcopy.

Is there a chance that previous digital owners would get a discount?

Can't wait to purchase a PoD Version of this soon! Looks fantastic!
I'm really into the cosmology of D&D, read throw the Manual of the Planes of AD&D, 3rd and 4th Edition. Now, finally, we'll have a complete Book about it for 5th Edition. Love it!
